Libbie's Programs

COMFORT THROUGH FOOD

The Comfort Through Food program provides a source of nutrition for children in cancer treatment when it is difficult to eat, as well as fun food activities for patients and their families to enjoy while receiving care at the clinic. The program offers psychosocial support of the mind, body and spirit to help patients cope with cancer treatment. We provide delicious comfort foods to patients and their families at the Children’s Blood & Cancer Center at Dell Children’s inpatient unit and outpatient clinic, as well as to families staying at the nearby Ronald McDonald Family Rooms.

Macaroni and Cheese / Chicken ‘n Dumplings

The program’s signature servings of mac n’ cheese and chicken and dumplings are soft, tasty and easily digestible comfort foods in single serving, microwavable containers. We stock the freezers in the family rooms of the Children’s Blood & Cancer Center outpatient clinic, 4 North inpatient unit at Dell Children’s, and the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. These foods can be especially comforting for children who have trouble eating due to mouth and throat discomfort from treatments. CBCC staff call it the “magic wand” that eases the anxiety of so many children as they anticipate procedures. The nurses often say much needed weight gain can be attributed in part to our delicious mac n’ cheese. We will supply more than 4,000 servings of mac n’ cheese over the coming year.

Food Fight For Life

A question often heard from parents of children in treatment is "How do I feed my child?" Food Fight For Life©, a nutrition program that provides at minimum four cooking classes a year, teaches how to make nutrient-dense meals. Children going through treatment often don't have the best relationship with food.
You can definitely see a difference in a child’s overall energy, strength, and quality of life when nutrition intervention is started early, aggressively managed and an integral part of their treatment plan. They tend to have more “good” days than “bad”, recover quicker from treatment side effects and infections, and enjoy living life.
